CONTENT > FEATURETTES

Although Quasi was designed primarily for autonomous interactive experiences, his show-control hardware and simple content authoring tools lend themselves to the development of pre-scripted content. The following featurettes were developed in two weeks by teams of four to five students who had no prior experience with the IBI platform.

In "Quasi-oke", the first theatrical piece starring Quasi, a "volunteer" from the audience is asked to come up and pick a song to sing. Estefania Pickens, ETC-student and singer extraordinaire, selects the duet "Summer Nights" from the musical Grease. After she convinces Quasi to sing the duet with her, he asks his friends to sing the male backup and requests that the audience sing the female backup. This 10 minute piece brought the house down during the finale of the Fall 2004 Building Virtual Worlds Show.

It had been decided that Don Marinelli, co-director of the ETC, would once again be giving an introduction to the final BVW show as he had done in previous years. This year, however, he would be giving it as Leonardo Da Vinci, a role he has played in the CMU promotional play The Da Vinci Effect. This BVW group developed a co-host piece for Quasi, allowing him to play sidekick to Leonardo. In addition to opening the show, Quasi and Leonardo introduced short videos on Animateering and Panda3D, two ETC projects that were to be promoted during the show.
