Experiences developed for the Jam-O-World platform undergo both a design process on paper and a revision process based on feedback recieved through play testing with children and adults. The initial process takes place before any players get to play the game and involves visualizing concepts, deciding on goals, and exploring possibilities for experiences. The revision process mostly involves adjusting game balance, revising interface imagery to make it easier for people to understand, and other changes that make the game more fun, more accessible, and polished. Below is a description of the process that was undergone to develop the Hip Hop experience.
Design Process

For the Hip Hop experience, the design team wanted to create a game that achieved several goals:

    1. Create a game that could be enjoyed in a public space by a variety of groups, from complete strangers to a family.
    2. Explore methods for conducting attention between different projection surfaces.
    3. Use musical elements and dancing as an integral part of gameplay
    4. Design an original character who would dance and carry on as people played.

Revision Process

After getting the experience on its feet and running, the team brought in groups of players to test the game and ask them what they thought. Guests were observed as they played the game and the group paid special attention to whether they understood the rules, knew when to watch the bunny, figured out the interface, noticed their impact on the music, and most of all, had fun.

Through several cycles of testing and revision, the experience went through some important changes. Click here to read about what happened and what the group learned from this process.
