Week 5

Week 5 is when we finally found our direction. Until this point, our understanding of the problem space was on a very high level. While it was a noble cause to try and teach as much as we could to our young audience, the fact of the matter was that we could not encompass every aspect of disinformation in a single game made in the span of a semester.

So our design process changed to reflect our redefinition of the problem subspace. Our definition is that we are building a game that aims to teach middle school students the basics of Credibility Checking. We will accomplish this by adapting the CRAAP test framework to fit our needs.

We built a mechanic revolving around social media and search engines that would simulate  Below is a screenshot of a rudimentary paper prototype that helped demonstrate our approach.

Programming

Dialogue System

  • Character portraits are now displayed based on the name in the script.
  • The framework is written in a way that requires the least effort from the designer.
  • A feature for controlling and displaying the emotion of a character is under development.

Search Engine

Search is now functional. The results are displayed based on a heuristic value. The higher the value, the higher up the order of the result.

Player can type using the keyboard
Red: Indexed web page. Green: heuristic value

Next Steps

  • Finish the design framework
    • Assessment
    • Playtesting
  • Finalize art style
  • Create a prototype
    • Teaches one of 5 tools for fact-checking
  • Gold spike to test our pipeline
