Team Progress

Week 5 – Creating narrative elements and tech demo

It was another progressive week for the team. The predominant working focus was to create a convincing story that justified all the gaming elements the team designed in previous week. Also, the team spent extra time designing in detail how the Valkyrie system could be merged into the project.

The team started off with the background settings of the Valkyrie system and the first three levels. These settings provided the players with a complete story on a group that collected damaged robots and turned them into demining machines. They used these machines to help out the community that had suffered from a great war in the nearby areas.

Also, the team dives even deeper into the character settings and the individual narrations among the transitions of levels. By doing this, the whole story is enriched.

In the first level, the players need to help a lady to deliver a birthday flower to her friend. Due to the war, the path to her friend’s “home” is filled with landmines. After the players clear out the landmines, they will find out that the lady’s friend actually died during the war. The birthday flower is a respect item given to her graveyard. Through this story, the team wants to convey the idea of the damage wars bring to the people.

The second story is about helping the homeless people. Due to the massive war in the urban area, a lot of people lost their homes. To make the situation even worse, the city streets now are filled with deadly landmines to prevent the people from coming back. The players need to help those people to clear out the landmines so that they can rebuild their home.

After the homeless people rebuild their homes, there is a water supply shortage within the city. The players find out that the convey for resupplying the city is blocked by a nearby desert area where landmines are abundant. This area is used to be a main farming district but is ruined by the great war. The players need to come in and clear out the mines so that water can get into the city and locals can replant the desert area.

Besides the design of stories, the engineers on the team also create a tech demo showing two players joining the same session hosted by a dedicated server. This will be the fundamental tech stack for the whole project.
