Ages 9-12
-All use the family computer, which is in a public room
-Most likely a Dell running Windows XP
-Do not use the computer every day
-Use computer mostly at school
-Most common uses are for research, homework, games online, and chatting online
via AOL
-Very few use computer at school
-Parents use computer more than they do
-Parents do not have concrete rules about computer usage
-Know what a virus is, think their computer had one at one time
-Unless they need a parents help, they will install things on the computer by
themselves, but
most do not know how to install software
-If the computer stopped working, they would go to their parents or an older
sibling
-If something happened with the computer, they would “turn it off, walk
away and pretend
they weren’t using it”
-The few who do chat online only do so through AOL and only with people they
know “I have
this one friend that someone she didn’t even know tried to talk to her
online”
-Generally would not reply to someone they did not know unless introduced by
a friend
-Common response would be to block or ignore
-If they encountered something on the internet that they were suspicious of
(money-making
scheme), they would generally ignore or ask someone, or go to it once and realize
it is
a scam
-Not all of them use e-mail
-Would open an attachment if it was from a friend or was innocent looking
-Think their parents know more about the internet
-Have a basic understanding that it exists, probably not how it works
-Have gotten some basic instruction about proper internet usage in school but
it was not very
impactful or useful “a couple pages about how the internet can be used
badly, but they didn’t make a very big deal out of it”
-Know not to give out their names, phone numbers, age, or address
-More likely to tell people what grade they are in and what school they go to
-Are susceptible to e-mail scams that mention something is important
-Very diligent about e-mails advertising free stuff “I almost clicked
on one of those once, but
then I called my sister over”
